Along the Hudson River, Troy residents may notice rodents in or around their homes. Mice and rats are drawn to water sources since rivers and lakes offer the rodents plenty of food and provide shelter in the form of sticks and leaves. However, once the temperature drops, they’re forced to move indoors. Rodents are able to squeeze through small cracks at any level of your home. Keep an eye out for rodent droppings as that is a tell-tale sign of an infestation.
During the warmer months in Troy, ants can also be a nuisance. They will invade homes looking for food or moisture and can enter through the tiniest of cracks. Though regular household ants may be bothersome, carpenter ants are the true playground bullies.
Carpenter ants can create serious problems for homeowners in Troy. They chew tunnels through wood, damaging the structural integrity of buildings. If firewood, fencing, or wooden construction material is close to the home, carpenter ants can use those materials for nesting. They are then drawn to food and water inside the house.
To avoid household ants and carpenter ants, keep branches and other materials located at least a few feet from the home. It’s also important to keep your kitchen clean and fix leaky pipes. Just like rodents, ants love water. Why not stay pest-free for as long as possible?
Albany Branch Manager, Kevin Wells, lives in Troy. He has wonderful memories of going to get ice cream at the Snowman Ice Cream stand. He also loves walking along the hiking trails on Peebles Island with his dogs. His walks serve as both a relaxing stroll and a visual history lesson since you can still see the mounds the Americans used during the Revolutionary War while hiking! Jeremiah, a Fox technician, and other team members agree that Peeble Island is a great place to experience both nature and history.
Recently, our Albany technicians held their Green Glove Project, an annual trash pickup project, at Prospect Park in Troy. They filled eight trash bags with litter over the course of a few hours.
Kevin was proud of the work his team did. “We did this project to help out in the community in which we work,” he said. “We’re glad to have been able to lend a hand to clean up our community.”
